Linda started her first horticultural business in 1976 and was introduced to herbs and alternative medications in the late 70’s when a family member was informed that (due to defoliant poisoning... not Agent Orange?), he had little time left on this planet. Shortly after this prognosis, the family member was introduced to a young MD who believed in holistic and alternative medicines. He was then put on a regimen of clam shell and a litany of sea weeds and herbs, then watched only comedies. He is still here after 27+ years and two beautiful children. In October of 1997 Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer. The next year was spent combating the affects of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments; her husband applied techniques of the heart and sole. Six years later Linda has been deemed Cancer Free. Among other things out of that year came the desire to change a little of what people put in and on their bodies. The realization that the proverbial ‘someday in the future’ we all speak of was now, and that to make a dream come true she needed to begin. Realizing the potential of herbs and the sense of “Self” coupled with mind dynamics, Linda has been working with herbs [and luffa] for more than 18 years. She started a small herb garden (lavender and luffa) 20 years ago and has never stopped looking around for common herbs and the more unique varieties that help us in our day to day battles with life and its daily stresses. With that in mind Linda and a longtime friend put their heads together and “The Luffa Farm” was born. The two friends started their venture in October of 1999 by becoming one of the very first commercial growers of luffa sponges in the United States; “The Farm” was the first in the State of California certified as Organically Grown. During the following 3 years they developed the farm in Central California, starting with two small greenhouses and graduating in 2001 to a new larger commercial house. The luffa grows there year round, something no one anywhere else has attempted. As the farm was growing, so also were the herbal and bath product ends of the business. In the first year a fine line of herbal products was developed in the Redwood City locations, which included all natural glycerin soaps, along with herbal bath products, and aromatherapy products to help lessen the stress of daily life. Great care and thought went into these items and they were greatly accepted. As the business grew it became apparent that, with so many miles between the two locations, it would be best for the two ladies to split apart and each fly on their own; the one company has now become two separate entities: Mariposa Loofa in Northern California, and The Luffa Farm in Central California. The Luffa Farm continues to grow and produce some of the finest luffa sponges available today in the United States. Mariposa Loofa officially began business on November 1st 2002 and Linda is still busy in her workshop providing herbal wonders. We now have a vastly new clientele and are very grateful for the new friends made and are very excited about this new page in our book.
